ABOUT LISA MELILLO
Lisa is a fine artist based in Ocean County, New Jersey. Throughout Lisa’s life, drawing and painting have been constant sources of joy and creative expression. She continues to grow, learn and be inspired through classes and workshops with some of the area’s leading artists and teachers, as well as by the talented and incredibly supportive local art community.
Lisa’s decision to devote herself to animal/pet portraiture grew out of her deep love and appreciation for all creatures, and the unconditional love and devotion our pets offer that enrich our lives in ways that can’t be put into words. Nothing makes her happier than communicating the unique personality of each dog, cat, horse or aardvark she paints, but the most rewarding aspect of her work is seeing the excitement and joy (and happy tears) that people experience upon seeing their pets’ portraits for the first time. She is incredibly gratified to be chosen to honor so many beloved four-legged family members.
A self-described horse-crazy child, Lisa started drawing horses as soon as she was old enough to hold a pencil, and her fascination with these majestic animals has never waned. Having spent considerable time around horses, both as an avid observer and an enthusiastic rider, Lisa is able to accurately capture the beauty and personality of her equine subjects.
Lisa’s preference is to meet and greet each animal subject (and his/her owner!) before starting a commission, but if this is not possible she will ask a few questions to get a sense of each pet’s personality, and request several photos or videos before beginning a portrait. She also feels strongly that you, as the portrait’s commissioner, should be a part of the creative process from inception to completion.
Lisa is grateful to continue to learn from talented local and regional artists, and she has had the good fortune to attend in-person workshops with leading pastelists Stan Perlack, Tony Allain and Jeri Greenberg, as well as the renowned animal artist Jennifer Gennari. Her work has been accepted into many juried shows including: Pastel Society of NJ, Tewksbury Historical Society Art Show, Phillips Mill Art Show, New Hope, PA.
Although she doesn’t share her household with animal companions at the moment, Lisa absolutely adores her cute and very goofy grand-dog, Henry. (follow Henry’s adventures on Instagram, @happyhenrythehavanese).
